Everything you need to know before you book
It is graded moderate. The distances are short but you gain altitude quickly to 14,100 ft, and the summit day is a long 8-9 hours. Fit beginners with some cardio preparation can do it; the rapid altitude gain is the main challenge.
It is a high glacial lake at 14,100 ft, sacred to the sage Bhrigu, sitting in a bowl ringed by snow peaks. The trek is famous for reaching vast alpine meadows almost from the start - unusual and spectacular.
Bhrigu is shorter (5 days vs 6) and an out-and-back to a lake rather than a crossover. It reaches similar altitude faster, so acclimatisation matters, but it packs big scenery into fewer days.
May to June (with lingering snow and lush meadows) and September to October (clear skies, golden meadows) are ideal. It closes in winter and is slippery during the monsoon.
We start with a Manali acclimatisation day, ascend at a measured pace, and the trek leader monitors everyone for altitude symptoms, with oxygen and a first-aid kit on hand.
We camp on the open meadows (such as Jonker Thatch) in tents with sleeping bags and hot meals. The high, open camps offer superb star-filled skies.
A few weeks of jogging or brisk walking plus some leg strength work makes the summit day much more comfortable. We share a simple preparation plan when you book.
A daypack with water, snacks, warm layers, a rain jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headlamp and personal medicines. We provide tents, sleeping bags and all trek meals.
