Why Travel to Ladakh

Ladakh is India at its most cinematic — a high-altitude cold desert where snow peaks meet electric-blue lakes, prayer flags flutter over 5,000-metre passes, and centuries-old monasteries cling to ochre cliffs. Yatraved runs Leh-based road trips, bike expeditions and treks with built-in acclimatisation, all permits arranged, verified stays and captains who've driven every switchback.

Best Time to Visit Ladakh

☀️ Summer (May–Sep)

Roads openPeak season

The main travel window. The Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways open by late May, and by June–August the passes to Nubra, Pangong and Tso Moriri are all accessible. Warm days, cold nights.

🍂 Shoulder (Apr & Oct)

Fewer crowdsSome passes shut

Quieter Leh, golden light and great monastery visits — but the higher lakes and passes may still be closed by snow, so itineraries stay closer to Leh.

❄️ Winter (Nov–Mar)

Fly-in onlyChadar season

Leh is reachable only by air as the highways close. It's bitterly cold but magical — frozen landscapes, empty monasteries and the famous Chadar (frozen river) trek in Jan–Feb.

Top Places to Visit

Leh

~11,500 ft

Your base and acclimatisation hub — Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, the buzzing old market, and day trips to Thiksey, Hemis and Shey monasteries.

Nubra Valley

via Khardung La

Reached over one of the world's highest passes — sand dunes at Hunder, double-humped Bactrian camels, and the giant Maitreya Buddha at Diskit.

Pangong Lake

~14,000 ft

The colour-shifting lake that spills into Tibet — impossibly blue by day, star-filled by night, and unforgettable for a lakeside stay.

Tso Moriri & Hanle

Remote & dark skies

Ladakh's quieter high-altitude lake and the Hanle dark-sky reserve — among the best stargazing spots on Earth.

Sham Valley

Easy day loop

The gentle "Apricot Valley" — Magnetic Hill, the Indus–Zanskar Sangam, and the ancient Alchi and Likir monasteries.

Turtuk & Khardung La

Border villages

The last Indian village before Pakistan, with a unique Balti culture — plus the bragging rights of standing atop Khardung La.

How to Reach Ladakh

✈️ By Air

The quickest route — direct flights to Leh (Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport) from Delhi and other metros. Fly-in travellers must rest on Day 1 to acclimatise.

🚗 By Road (Manali)

The classic overland route over Baralacha La and Tanglang La — spectacular, and it helps with gradual acclimatisation. Open roughly late May to October.

🚗 By Road (Srinagar)

Via Kargil and the Zoji La pass — gentler on altitude and rich in scenery, pairing beautifully with a Kashmir extension.

Ladakh Tour FAQs

May to September is the main season, when the highways and the passes to Nubra, Pangong and Tso Moriri are open (June–August is peak). April and October are quieter but some high lakes may still be snowed in. In winter, Leh is reachable only by air — the time for the frozen-river Chadar trek.
Yes — Inner Line Permits are required for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri, Hanle and Turtuk. Yatraved arranges these as part of your package; we only need a copy of your photo ID in advance. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit, which we also handle.
Leh sits at about 11,500 ft, so our itineraries build in a full rest day on arrival before heading higher. We carry oxygen and a first-aid kit on all trips, keep the pace gentle, and brief you on hydration and precautions. Travellers with heart or lung conditions should consult a doctor before booking.
The fastest way is a direct flight to Leh from Delhi. You can also drive in overland — the Manali–Leh route or the gentler Srinagar–Leh route — which helps you acclimatise gradually. Fly-in travellers should keep Day 1 free to rest.
Only postpaid SIMs work in Ladakh (prepaid ones don't), and BSNL and Jio have the best reach. There's little to no network at Pangong, Nubra's interior or Tso Moriri, so download maps offline. ATMs are only reliable in Leh — carry enough cash for the trip.
A comfortable Ladakh trip runs 6-8 days: two days in Leh to acclimatise, then Nubra Valley over Khardung La, Pangong Lake, and the monasteries of the Indus Valley. Shorter 5-day trips are possible but leave little buffer for altitude, so we always build in a proper acclimatisation day at the start.
Yes, with the right pacing. Because of the altitude we plan gentle first days, avoid over-packing the itinerary, and keep oxygen and a medical kit in the vehicle. We'll flag any segment such as the high passes that needs extra care, and can tailor the route for children or senior travellers.
Layers are essential, since days can be warm and nights near freezing even in summer. Bring a warm jacket, thermals, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, a reusable water bottle and any personal medication. We share a full packing checklist once your trip is confirmed.
