One of India's most visited pilgrimages, the Vaishno Devi Yatra takes devotees up the Trikuta hills to a holy cave shrine near Katra. Here's everything you need to plan it - registration, routes and darshan.
Every year, over a crore pilgrims make the yatra to Mata Vaishno Devi, whose shrine sits in a cave high in the Trikuta hills of Jammu & Kashmir. It''s a deeply moving journey - and, with a little planning, a very doable one. Here''s your complete guide.
Where is it, and how do you reach?
The base town is Katra, in the Reasi district near Jammu. Fly into Jammu (IXJ) or take a train to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) station - Katra is a short drive from either. From Katra, the shrine (the Bhawan) is about 12–13 km uphill.
Registration is mandatory
Every yatri needs a free RFID yatra registration/slip from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, available at Katra counters or online. Carry a valid photo ID. Without the slip you can''t begin the climb - we arrange the registration so there''s no queueing hassle.
How to get up: trek, pony, palki, battery car or helicopter
- On foot: the classic 12–13 km climb from Banganga, via the Ardh Kuwari cave, on a well-paved path with plenty of rest and food stalls.
- Pony or palki (palanquin): for most of the route, ideal if walking the full distance is difficult.
- Battery car: covers parts of the newer, gentler track.
- Helicopter: from Katra to Sanjichhat (near the Bhawan) in a few minutes - the fastest option, perfect for seniors or a tight schedule. Book early; it''s weather-dependent and in high demand.
The darshan
At the Bhawan, devotees queue for darshan of the three pindis (natural rock forms) representing the goddess in her Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati aspects. Many then continue about 2.5 km up to the Bhairavnath temple, said to complete the yatra.

Best time to go
- March–October: pleasant weather and the most comfortable climb.
- Navratri (spring & autumn): the most vibrant and spiritually charged - but extremely crowded, so book well ahead.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): cold with occasional snow near the top; the yatra continues but dress warm.
Quick tips
- Start the climb early (pre-dawn) to beat the heat and crowds.
- Wear comfortable shoes and carry a light warm layer - it''s cooler at the top.
- Cloakrooms at Katra and the Bhawan hold bags; phones and leather items may be restricted inside the shrine.
- Carry some cash for ponies, offerings and prasad.
