About this Culture Trail

Ladakh beyond the postcards — its living Buddhist heritage

Ladakh isn't only lakes and passes — it's one of the last strongholds of Himalayan Buddhist culture. This trail slows down to explore it: the great monasteries around Leh, the villages and gompas of Nubra, and the ancient wall paintings of Alchi and Likir in the Sham Valley.

You'll time visits for morning prayers, meet resident monks, and travel with a local guide who can read the stories in the murals. We keep a rest day in Leh, cross Khardung La to Nubra, and handle all permits — travelling by private vehicle throughout.

Ideal for culture and history lovers, photographers, and anyone who wants to understand Ladakh, not just see it.

Trip Highlights

Ladakh's greatest monasteries & living villages

Morning prayers at Thiksey, plus Shey, Hemis & Stok

The 1,000-year-old murals of Alchi & Likir

Cross Khardung La into Nubra Valley

Diskit Monastery & the villages of Nubra

A camel ride on the Hunder dunes

A local guide, permits & acclimatisation handled

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Six days through Ladakh's monasteries and villages

  • Arrive at Leh airport; our team transfers you to the hotel.
  • Complete rest to adjust to the altitude — the single best thing you can do today.
  • An easy evening at Leh market or a café if you feel settled; dinner and overnight in Leh.
💡 Pro Tip: Hydrate, avoid alcohol on Day 1, and rest — it sets up the whole trip.
  • Begin early to catch the morning prayer ceremony at Thiksey Monastery, Ladakh's most photogenic gompa.
  • Visit Shey Palace, Hemis (the largest and richest monastery), and the royal Stok Palace museum.
  • Return to Leh for Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace and Namgyal Tsemo at golden hour.
  • Dinner and overnight in Leh.
🌟 Note: This day stays around Leh's altitude on purpose — culture-rich, and it helps you acclimatise before Nubra.
  • Drive up to Khardung La (~18,380 ft) for photos at the top of the trip.
  • Descend into Nubra and visit Diskit Monastery with its towering Maitreya Buddha overlooking the valley.
  • Reach the Hunder dunes for a Bactrian camel ride at sunset.
  • Dinner and overnight at a Nubra camp or guesthouse.
💡 Pro Tip: Keep a jacket handy at Khardung La — it's cold and windy, and you shouldn't linger long at that height.
  • Explore the green villages on the Nubra's north bank — Sumur and the peaceful Samstanling Monastery.
  • Continue to Panamik for its hot springs and views towards the Siachen ranges.
  • Time to slow down, meet villagers and see everyday Ladakhi life away from the crowds.
  • Dinner and overnight in Nubra.
🌟 Note: If the road and permits allow on your dates, we can swap in a visit to Turtuk — the Balti village near the border — on request.
  • Return over Khardung La and continue along the Indus into the Sham Valley.
  • Visit the ancient Likir Monastery and the exquisite 11th-century murals of Alchi, some of the oldest Buddhist art in India.
  • Pass the ruined citadel of Basgo before reaching Leh by evening.
  • Dinner and overnight in Leh.
💡 Pro Tip: Photography is restricted inside Alchi's shrines to protect the paintings — soak them in with your own eyes.
  • After breakfast, transfer to Leh airport for your onward flight.
  • Trip concludes with a deeper feel for Ladakh's living heritage.
💡 Pro Tip: Leh flights leave early and can be weather-affected — keep onward connections loose.
