The Char Dham Yatra - the sacred circuit of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Uttarakhand Himalayas - is the pilgrimage of a lifetime. Here's everything a first-timer needs to plan it well.
Every year, lakhs of devotees make the journey to the four holy shrines high in the Garhwal Himalayas. The Char Dham (“four abodes”) is deeply spiritual, spectacularly scenic, and — with a little planning — very doable. This guide walks you through the essentials.
The four dhams, in order
The traditional circuit is done west to east:
- Yamunotri — source of the Yamuna; reached by a ~6 km trek (or pony/palki) from Janki Chatti.
- Gangotri — source of the Ganga; the temple is right by the road, no trek needed.
- Kedarnath — the most challenging and revered; a ~16–18 km trek (or pony/palki/helicopter) from Gaurikund.
- Badrinath — dedicated to Lord Vishnu; road-accessible, near the last village of Mana.
When is the best time?
The shrines open around late April/May (on Akshaya Tritiya) and close around Diwali (Oct/Nov). The sweet spots are:
- May–June: pleasant weather, but the busiest period — book early.
- September–October: fewer crowds, clear mountain views, cooler air.
- July–August (monsoon): lush but risky — landslides can disrupt the mountain roads.
How many days do you need?
- Full Char Dham by road: about 10–12 days from Haridwar/Dehradun.
- Do Dham (Kedarnath + Badrinath): around 6–8 days.
- Char Dham by helicopter: roughly 5–6 days, covering all four with chopper hops.
Registration is mandatory
All Char Dham pilgrims must complete the compulsory Char Dham registration (issued by the Uttarakhand government) before darshan, and a health check is advised given the altitude. When you travel with us we handle the registration and paperwork for you.
By road, pony or helicopter?
Kedarnath is the deciding factor. From Gaurikund you can:
- Trek the 16–18 km (a full day up) — rewarding but demanding.
- Take a pony or palki for most of the climb.
- Fly by helicopter from Phata/Sersi/Guptkashi — the fastest and easiest option, ideal for seniors or tight schedules.
If time or fitness is limited, the helicopter Char Dham is a genuine game-changer — four shrines in a handful of days.
How fit do you need to be?
Yamunotri and especially Kedarnath involve high-altitude treks, so a basic level of fitness helps. Do some walking practice beforehand, ascend gradually, stay hydrated, and don't ignore signs of altitude sickness. Pony, palki and helicopter options mean most devotees — including older pilgrims — can complete the yatra comfortably.
What to pack
- Warm layers, a heavy jacket, gloves and a cap — it's cold at the shrines even in summer.
- A light raincoat/poncho and quick-dry clothes.
- Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip.
- Personal medicines, a basic first-aid kit and any AMS medication (consult your doctor).
- A walking stick, torch, power bank and enough cash (ATMs are scarce up high).
- Your ID and Char Dham registration.
A few practical tips
- Start each day early — weather is clearest in the morning and treks are best begun at dawn.
- Carry offline maps; mobile network is patchy in the mountains.
- Respect temple customs and dress modestly.
- Build buffer time — mountain roads and weather can cause delays.
