Most first-timers fly into Guwahati in neighbouring Assam and drive up to Shillong — about three scenic hours. From there, six days is the sweet spot: enough to cover the headline sights without rushing between them on Meghalaya''s winding hill roads. Here''s the itinerary we recommend most often.
Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong
Land in Guwahati, then drive to Shillong, stopping at the vast Umiam Lake for your first postcard view. Check in and spend the evening at Police Bazaar, Shillong''s buzzing market, sampling Khasi snacks and the city''s famous cafe culture.
Day 2: Shillong sightseeing
Ease in with a local day — Shillong Peak for the panorama, the three-tiered Elephant Falls, Ward''s Lake and the Don Bosco Museum, a brilliant introduction to North-East cultures. Keep the afternoon light for photos.
Day 3: Cherrapunji (Sohra)
Head to Cherrapunji — one of the wettest places on earth — for the thundering Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters falls, the limestone Mawsmai Cave, and the Eco Park viewpoints. Mornings are clearest before the clouds roll in.
- Wear grippy shoes — viewpoints can be wet and slippery.
- Carry an umbrella or poncho even in the dry season.
- If you''re fit, add the double-decker root bridge trek (a big day out).
Day 4: Dawki & Mawlynnong
The highlight for many. Boat on the astonishing Umngot river at Dawki, where the water is so clear boats appear to float on air, then visit Mawlynnong, feted as Asia''s cleanest village, with its bamboo skywalk and the nearby Riwai living root bridge. Go early for the glassiest water.

Day 5: Laitlum Canyon & Mawphlang
Balance the crowds with two quieter gems — the dramatic Laitlum Canyon, where the hills seem to fall away into cloud, and the ancient Mawphlang Sacred Forest, protected for centuries by Khasi tradition. Return to Shillong for a last cafe evening.
Day 6: Shillong to Guwahati
Drive back to Guwahati for your flight, with an optional stop at the revered Kamakhya temple if time allows.
