Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar & Mehandipur Balaji: Our Jyotirlinga Road Trip from Delhi-NCR

✍️ Aditya Sharma📅 Aug 20, 2026⏱️ 11 min read

We had been wanting to do a proper Jyotirlinga trip for years, and this time we finally did it - a family journey from Delhi-NCR to Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar on the Narmada, and a bonus stop at Mehandipur Balaji on the way home. Here is exactly how our trip went, with all the practical details you will need to plan your own.

There are twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva across India, and two of them - Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar - sit close together in Madhya Pradesh. That made them the perfect pair for a long-weekend pilgrimage. The four of us set off from Delhi-NCR, and instead of driving ourselves the whole way, we booked a Yatraved cab - a comfortable Baleno sedan with a driver, so all of us could rest, take in the road, and simply focus on darshan.

Day 1: Delhi-NCR to Ujjain

We started early - around 5:30 AM from Ghaziabad. Ujjain is roughly 750 km away, so it is a full day on the road; with a couple of stops for food and chai, we reached Ujjain by about 7 PM. Having a driver meant nobody was tired at the wheel, which made a huge difference on such a long day.

We had kept our hotel near Ujjain railway station, and got a room for the night for around ₹2,500. After freshening up, we headed to the temples - the temples are a short auto ride from that area.

Shipra snan, Harsiddhi & Mahakal darshan

We began with a holy dip in the Shipra river. Then we visited the Harsiddhi Mata temple, which is right by the river - in the evening, before aarti, they light up the two tall deep stambh (lamp towers) with dozens of little flames, and it looks absolutely stunning.

From Harsiddhi it is only about 500 metres to the Mahakaleshwar temple. We joined the queue and had darshan within about 1 to 1.5 hours. Coming out, we caught the light show at the Mahakal Lok corridor - the grand new pathway lined with statues from Shiva's legends. It is a beautiful way to end the evening.

After that we returned to the hotel, had dinner, and slept early. The next morning we were up by 5 AM, and by 6 AM we went back for a second, calmer Mahakal darshan - mornings are lovely and less rushed.

Day 2: Kaal Bhairav, then on to Omkareshwar

After checking out, we drove to the Kaal Bhairav temple, about 6 km from Mahakal - the guardian deity of Ujjain, famous for the unique offering made here. Darshan done, we set off for Omkareshwar, about 140 km away. We stopped for lunch en route, and the last stretch winds through hills along the Narmada valley - genuinely one of the prettiest temple drives we have done.

A smart tip we followed: we booked our Omkareshwar hotel about 4-5 km before the temple, because parking near the temple itself takes time and can be chaotic. Here too we got a comfortable room for the group for around ₹2,500, and took an auto to the temples.

Two temples on the Narmada

Omkareshwar has two main temples - Mamleshwar on the mainland side, and the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga on an Om-shaped island in the river. You can reach the island by boat across the Narmada, or by the bridge. By the time we arrived it was around 6 PM, so we first took a dip in the Narmada and had darshan at Mamleshwar. Night was falling, so we left the island Jyotirlinga for the next morning, went back to the hotel, had dinner, and rested.

Day 3: Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga darshan

We woke at 5 AM, and by 6-6:30 AM took an auto to the Narmada ghats. After a morning dip, we crossed by boat to the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. The darshan here took us about four hours - it does get busy - but it was deeply worth it. We came back across the river, had darshan again at Mamleshwar, bought toys for the kids, collected prasad, and picked up a few things everyone wanted from the market.

We checked out at 11 AM and began the drive home. As the evening wore on and we realised we would reach very late, we looked up what else lay on our route - and found we could visit Mehandipur Balaji.

Bonus stop: Mehandipur Balaji

Mehandipur Balaji - the famous Hanuman temple in the Dausa district of Rajasthan - was only about 60-70 km extra off our route. We decided to add it: find a hotel near the temple for the night, do darshan in the morning, and then head home. We reached late, found a hotel just 1 km from the temple, and slept. The next morning we were up by 7, and by 8 AM took an auto to the temple. Darshan here took only about an hour. From there, we drove home - a few food stops on the way - and reached by around 4 PM. A tired but blessed end to a wonderful trip.

Two Jyotirlingas, a Shaktipeeth, Kaal Bhairav, the Narmada, and Balaji - all in one road trip. Sometimes the best pilgrimages are the ones you simply set off on.
