Where to Find Snow in Himachal, and Which Month to Go

✍️ Arjun Nair📅 Oct 29, 2026⏱️ 9 min read

Every winter we get the same message: "we want snow, where should we go?" The honest answer has two parts. Snow is weather, so nobody can promise it — but height and timing change the odds enormously, and most disappointed trips are disappointed because of a choice made before anyone left home. Here is how to stack the odds in your favour.

The one rule: height beats everything

A place 500 m higher will hold snow weeks longer than the town below it. That is why people stand in slush in Manali town while Solang, 13 km away, is white. If snow is the point of your trip, book your stay as high as you reasonably can, and plan day trips higher still.

Month by month

December

The month most people book and the least reliable one. Early December is usually bare. By the last week there is often a base at Solang and Kufri, but not always. Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive dates of the winter, which is bad luck, because the snow is not yet certain. Go for the atmosphere and treat snow as a bonus.

January

The coldest month and a strong bet. Solang, the Atal Tunnel area, Kufri and Narkanda all usually have real snow. Roads close for a few hours after heavy falls while they are cleared — routine, but build in slack.

February

Our pick. The base is deepest, the worst cold has eased, the days are brighter and longer, and the holiday crowds have gone. Prices are lower than December. If you can only pick one month, pick February.

Early March

Underrated. Still white up high at Solang and the tunnel, while the valleys begin to turn. Quiet, cheaper, and often the most pleasant weather of the whole season.

April onward

Snow retreats to the high passes. Rohtang usually opens somewhere between late April and June depending on the year. By then you are looking at a green trip with snow on the skyline, which is lovely but different.

Where to go for snow, ranked

Rohtang Pass is shut all winter. If an itinerary promises you Rohtang in January, that is a reason to ask questions. It usually opens somewhere between late April and June.

What to wear

The usual mistake is one very thick jacket and ordinary shoes. Layers beat bulk, and footwear matters most.

Do not buy snow gear in a city. Snow suits, boots and gloves are hired at Solang and Kufri for a few hundred rupees a person, and the local kit is better than anything you will carry up.

Winter realities

What a winter trip costs

Per person, land only, twin sharing:

Christmas and New Year add substantially to all of these. The last week of January and the whole of February are both cheaper and snowier — which is the single most useful thing in this article.

Go in February, stay high rather than in town, keep one spare day, and hire your boots locally. That is the whole strategy.

Frequently asked questions

Which month has the most snow in Himachal?
January and February. February usually has the deepest base with better weather, which makes it the best month overall.

Will there be snow in December?
Maybe. Early December is usually bare; the last week is often fine at Solang and Kufri. Nobody can promise it.

Is Rohtang Pass open in winter?
No. It is shut through the winter and usually opens between late April and June. The Atal Tunnel is the winter route to Lahaul and Sissu.

Where is snow most certain?
Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel area near Manali, in January and February.

Can we take small children or elderly parents?
Yes, with sensible planning — a heated hotel, short driving days, proper footwear and no long exposure at the highest points.

Do we need to carry snow clothes?
Carry layers and waterproof shoes. Hire the snow suit, boots and gloves locally.
