Most people who book Kashmir for winter are booking for one thing: snow. The honest answer is that snow is weather, not a timetable — but the odds are very different in December than they are in late January, and knowing that is the difference between a trip that delivers and one that does not. Here is what each month actually looks like, what stays open, and what to carry.
Month by month
December
Cold and often beautiful, but the least reliable month for fresh snow. Early December can be brown and bare at Gulmarg; by the end of the month there is usually a decent base. Christmas and New Year are the busiest and priciest days of the whole winter, which is unfortunate timing, because that is exactly when the snow is least certain. If you are coming for the holidays, come for the atmosphere and treat snow as a bonus.
January
The coldest month and the most dependable for snow. This is also Chillai Kalan, the forty harshest days of the Kashmiri winter, running roughly from late December to the end of January. Dal Lake can freeze at the edges, Gulmarg gets properly buried, and Srinagar nights fall well below zero. Flight delays and power cuts are more common. If snow is the whole point of the trip, January is the month.
February
Our pick. The snow base is deepest, the worst of the cold has passed, days are a little longer and brighter, and crowds are thinner than the holiday rush. Skiing in Gulmarg is at its best. By the end of the month Srinagar starts to soften.
Early March
A quiet, underrated window. Gulmarg is still white at the top while Srinagar begins to turn — almond blossom in Badamwari usually appears through March. You can get snow and spring in the same trip, and prices are lower than peak winter.
What is open, and what is not
- Srinagar — fully open all winter. Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens and the old city are all walkable and far quieter than in summer.
- Gulmarg — open, and the centre of the winter season. The gondola runs weather permitting; Phase 2 closes in high wind.
- Pahalgam — open and lovely in snow, though Chandanwari and the higher side roads close when it is heavy.
- Sonamarg — usually closed through deep winter. The road beyond a certain point is shut. Do not build a December to February trip around it.
- Doodhpatri — road access is weather dependent and often shut.
- Houseboats — many stay open, most with heating. Ask specifically about the heating before you book; a houseboat in January without it is a long night.
In practice, a winter Kashmir trip is Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Our winter trip is built around exactly those three.

The single mistake people make is bringing one very thick jacket and nothing else. Layers beat bulk every time, because you will be moving between a heated room, a car, and a windy ridge at 3,900 m all in the same morning.
- A thermal base layer, top and bottom. This matters more than the jacket.
- A fleece or wool mid layer.
- A windproof, water-resistant outer jacket with a hood.
- Waterproof shoes with grip. Not sneakers. Snow melts into fabric shoes in minutes and there is ice underfoot in Srinagar lanes too.
- Woollen socks, two pairs more than you think you need. Wet socks ruin days.
- Gloves, a woollen cap and a scarf. Waterproof gloves if you plan to touch snow — and you will.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen. Snow glare is strong and people get burnt in January.
- Lip balm and moisturiser. The dry cold cracks skin fast.
- A power bank. Cold drains phone batteries, and power cuts are normal.
- Any regular medicines, plus something simple for colds.
What not to carry: heavy ski gear. Snow suits, boots and gloves are hired at the base in Gulmarg for a few hundred rupees, and the local kit is better suited to the snow than anything you will buy in a city.
Flights, power and other winter realities
- Flight delays are normal. Fog and snow hold up Srinagar flights regularly in January. Take a morning flight, and do not book anything unmissable for the day you land or the day after you return.
- Power cuts happen. Hotels usually have backup. Charge everything when you can.
- The kangri. The small clay firepot carried under a pheran. You will be offered one; it genuinely works.
- Roads close for a few hours after heavy snow while they are cleared. This is routine and not an emergency, but it is why one spare day in a winter itinerary is worth more than an extra sightseeing stop.
- Days are short. It is dark by about 5:30 PM in January. Start early; there is less daylight to work with than you are used to.
What a winter trip costs
Land costs in winter are broadly similar to the rest of the year — roughly ₹17,000 to ₹22,000 per person for a comfortable 4 to 5 night trip on twin sharing. Two things do change:
- Flights spike around Christmas, New Year and the January school break. Book six to eight weeks out and you will pay a fraction of the walk-up fare.
- Gulmarg hotels cost noticeably more than Srinagar in peak snow. A night up there is still the best money you will spend on the trip.
If snow is the reason you are going, aim for the last week of January or any week in February, stay a night in Gulmarg, and keep one spare day. That is the whole strategy.
Frequently asked questions
Which month has the most snow in Kashmir?
January and February. February usually has the deepest base with slightly kinder weather, which makes it the best all-round month.
Will I definitely see snow in December?
No. Early December is often bare at Gulmarg. Anyone who guarantees snow in December is guessing. Late December is a reasonable bet, not a certainty.
Is Sonamarg open in winter?
Usually not. Plan a winter trip around Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam instead.
How cold does it actually get?
Srinagar commonly drops below freezing at night in January. Gulmarg is colder, and Apharwat at the top of the gondola colder again with wind.
Can we take small children or elderly parents in winter?
Yes, with sensible planning — a heated hotel, short driving days, and skipping Phase 2 of the gondola. Many families do it every year.
Do houseboats work in winter?
Many run through the season. Confirm the heating arrangement before booking, and consider a night or two rather than the whole trip.
