Shashthi landing on a Friday means the first weekend is enormous. If you have a choice, arrive by Thursday.
How pandal hopping actually works
Newcomers try to see twenty pandals in a night and end up seeing four, mostly from inside a queue. Locals do it differently:
- Pick one belt per night — north, south, or central. Crossing the city in Puja traffic wastes hours.
- Walk it. Inside a belt, walking beats any vehicle. Many roads are closed to traffic anyway.
- Go very early or very late. Between 6 AM and 10 AM the big pandals are nearly empty and beautifully lit for photos. After 2 AM the crowd thins again.
- The metro is your friend. It runs extended hours during Puja and skips the road jams entirely.
- Keep one day for the small ones. The para (neighbourhood) pujas have the warmth the giant ones have lost — and no queue.
Pandals worth planning around
North Kolkata — the old ones
Bagbazar Sarbojanin, Ahiritola, Kumartuli Park, Shobhabazar Rajbari and Jagat Mukherjee Park. This is where the traditional idol style lives, and the walk between them passes through the oldest part of the city. Visit Kumartuli itself in the morning — the lanes where the idols are made are an experience in their own right.
South Kolkata — the big themes
Deshapriya Park, Ekdalia Evergreen, Singhi Park, Ballygunge Cultural, Suruchi Sangha and Chetla Agrani. These are the theme pandals with art installations, prize-winning lighting and the longest queues. Plan two or three, not ten.
Central and elsewhere
College Square for the lights reflected in the water tank, Mohammad Ali Park, and across the river the Salt Lake and Behala clusters, which are easier on the feet.
Organisers sell passes and guided parikrama tours that cover a fixed list of pandals with priority entry. They save time on Ashtami and Navami; prices and pandal lists change every year, so check close to the dates.
Where to stay
- North Kolkata — walk to the traditional pujas, feel the old city. Fewer big hotels, more heritage stays.
- Park Street and Esplanade — the most convenient base, close to the metro and in the middle of everything.
- South Kolkata — best for the theme pandals and the better restaurants.
- Salt Lake — quieter, newer hotels, but a ride away from the action.
Rooms for Puja week get booked months ahead and rates climb steeply. If nothing is left, look at the days after Dashami — the city is calm, the lights are still up, and it costs a third as much.
What to eat
Puja food is half the festival. Bhog at a para puja — khichuri, labra, chatni and payesh, served to everyone who sits down. Kathi rolls at night, phuchka from a street stall, kosha mangsho with luchi, and mishti doi or sandesh to finish. Most restaurants run special Puja menus through the five days and stay open very late.
Practical tips for visitors
- Wear shoes you can walk 10 km in. That is a normal Puja night.
- Carry water and a power bank, and keep your phone in a front pocket in the crowd.
- Traffic plans change daily. Central Kolkata roads close to cars in the evenings, so a hotel you can walk back to is worth more than a cheaper one far away.
- October weather is humid. Light cottons, and a small umbrella for a stray shower.
- Ask before photographing rituals, especially anjali and sindoor khela.
- Dashami evening is for the immersion processions at the ghats — go with a local or a guide, the crowds are intense.
Durga Puja outside Kolkata
You do not have to be in Kolkata.
