Krishna Janmashtami 2026 falls on Friday, 4 September - the joyous celebration of Lord Krishna's birth. Here's the date and significance, the best places to celebrate in Delhi (temples and a lively mela), and where the grandest festivities happen.
Krishna Janmashtami (also written janmashtmi) celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. He was born at midnight in a prison cell in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, and his birth symbolises the triumph of good over evil. Temples hold midnight aartis, devotees fast, and cities come alive with jhankis, bhajans and dahi-handi fun.

Celebrating Janmashtami in Delhi
Delhi celebrates Janmashtami with real energy - here are two lovely ways to enjoy it:
1. ISKCON Temple, Delhi
The ISKCON temple is the most-visited and most popular place to celebrate Janmashtami in the capital. There's tremendous chahal-pehal (buzz) on the day - kirtans, a beautifully decorated deity, the midnight abhishek and thousands of devotees. If you're flying into Delhi or passing through on your way somewhere else, it's absolutely worth a visit on Janmashtami.
2. Janmashtami Mela, Paschim Vihar
For a fun, family evening there's a big Janmashtami mela in West Delhi:
- Venue: DDA Ground, Paschim Vihar - opposite Radisson Blu Hotel, near Peeragarhi metro station.
- What's there: rides/jhoole, shopping stalls and lots of food - a proper carnival vibe.
- Ticket: around ₹50. Timing: roughly 6 PM to 11 PM. Paid parking is available.
Please reconfirm the mela's dates, timings and ticket price locally before you go, as event details can change.
Whether it's the midnight aarti at ISKCON or jhoole and chaat at the mela, Janmashtami in Delhi has something for everyone. Jai Shri Krishna!
