Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October. It is the one day of the year when married women across north India keep a nirjala fast — no food, no water — from before sunrise until they see the moon. How the day runs
- Sargi, before dawn. The pre-sunrise meal, traditionally sent by the mother-in-law — fruit, dry fruit, sweets, parathas. Eat slowly and drink plenty of water; this has to carry you through the day.
- The fast through the day. No food or water from sunrise. Most families keep it simple and stay indoors through the afternoon.
- Mehndi and getting ready. Usually done the previous evening — mehndi lanes and salons get fully booked a week ahead.
- The evening puja. Women gather, the katha is read, and the thali is passed around in a circle.
- Moonrise. The moon is viewed through a sieve, then the husband, then water and the first bite of food.
Moonrise is not the same everywhere. It varies by an hour or more between the east and west of the country, and even between neighbouring cities. Check a reliable panchang for your own city on the day — and if you are travelling, check for the city you will actually be in that evening, not the one you left.
If you are travelling on 29 October
- Carry the sargi with you. On an early flight or train, a packed box of fruit, dry fruit and something filling is far better than what is available at 4 AM.
- Break the fast where you can see the sky. A rooftop, a terrace restaurant, a balcony facing east. Hotels in north India usually know the date and arrange a spot — ask when you book, not on the day.
- Watch the haze. In Delhi-NCR, late October air often hides the moon for an extra twenty minutes. Hill stations and open country are much clearer.
- Avoid long drives after the puja. After a full day without water, the last thing anyone should do is a night drive.
The weekend right after: 30 October to 1 November
Karwa Chauth is on a Thursday, which puts a full weekend immediately after it. Instead of another gold chain, a lot of couples now plan a short trip. These work from the big cities without needing extra leave.
